Some plants that grow well together: Have You Considered Companion Planting?

Planting Schedule Changes PDF Print E-mail

I originally planned on not starting seeds indoors this year.  That was because last year's seed starting indoors was a disaster - mainly because I did not set up a proper place with shelves and lights, and ended up dumping the seeds and seedlings several times moving them around all the time.

So, this year, I was looking for a way to get a head start, when I realizedI had a great place in the kitchen to start my seeds.  I have a large 4 shelf cupboard where I have the microwave in the top shelf area, and I used the other shelves to store various pots and pans and buckets for recycles.  I cleaned out those shelves, purchased 2 grow lights and had Den install them for me, and now I have a great place to start seeds!  Plus being in the kitchen, it is really handy for watering needs.

I planted onion and leek seeds yesterday.  I only planted half of each seed packet. That way if something bad happens to them, I will still have some backups that I can plant directly in the garden.  Another reason I only planted half was because I have purchased so many different seeds, that if I am at all successful in my gardening efforts, I may be running out of room to plant all these things!

I have been wanting to start stocking up on bags of dirt, but unfortunately it is still too early and they aren't in the Meijer garden center yet!  I think next time I am over there I will ask the garden guy when the garden center will be opening, or at least they get some bags of dirt in the indoor garden center.  They have put out seeds and some of the patio furniture.  I just wish I could remember his name, but I do still see him around all the time doing winter things.  I am having visions of my cat litter buckets filled with dirt and plants lined up along the driveway, sitting on the sunny west end of the porch, and along the walkway from driveway to porch.

I can hardly wait for the weather to change!!

HOMEMADE DOG FOOD
1 kg (2.2 lbs) beef mince - if you go to a butcher you'll be able to get a lower grade and cheaper mince. Our butcher is now charging $4/kilo.
1½ cups raw brown or white rice
1 cup raw barley OR lentils
1 cup raw pasta
2 cups chopped vegetables - it can be whatever you have on hand but NOT ONIONS or LEEKS.
1 spoonful of Vegemite (optional)
Water
Place all the above ingredients into a big stockpot. Cover with water and stir to break up the mince. Bring to the boil and simmer for 45 minutes. When it's finished cooking, top up the stockpot to the rim with water and leave to cool.
When it's cold, place into portion sized plastic containers and freeze until you need them.We make this once a week. It feeds our two dogs for seven days. The dogs love it and it's got no preservatives or artifical flavourings in it. It costs around $7 a week.
They also have a scoop of Omega 3 dog biscuits in the morning.

Quick and Easy Pizza Dough
Julie B. Home Helper
Bringing the pizza parlor to your very own kitchen can be fun for the whole family, especially with the strength of new and improved Bounty® paper towels behind you! Pizza sauce spills or messy flour on the counter are no match for the 25% thicker quilts than before and the cloth-like durability of new Bounty. Say yes to the special moments and family fun that make your life meaningful, because now you can Say Yes to the Mess.

INGREDIENTS
1 package dry yeast
¾ cup warm water
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
INSTRUCTIONS

   1. Preheat oven to 450°F, or 425°F if using a dark non-stick pan.
   2. Spray a 12” pizza pan with non-stick spray, then dust with a thin layer of flour.

Tip: For easy cleanup, cut out a 10” round piece of parchment paper and place it in the center of the pan after spraying but before dusting the pan with flour.
   3. Fill a medium-sized bowl with ¾ cup warm water, then stir in yeast packet and allow to soak for 5 minutes.
   4. In a large separate mixing bowl, combine flour, salt and sugar. Add the liquid yeast mixture to the dry ingredients, kneading for 2-3 minutes.

Tip: Keep your hands clean by kneading this sticky dough with a hand or standing mixer with a dough hook attachment, if available. Whenever handling the dough with your hands, remember to dust your hands heavily first.
   5. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm area for 15 minutes.
   6. Dust your work area heavily with flour to avoid sticking, then turn out dough onto your surface. With a floured rolling pin or well-floured hands, roll out dough to fit your 12” pizza pan.
   7. Place dough in oven and bake 12-15 minutes until lightly golden on edges.

Tip: After you’ve removed your finished dough from the oven, leave the heat on. You’ll simply top the crust with your ingredients and place the pizza back in the oven.

Gourmet Made Simple
Once you’ve baked your dough, it’s time to pile on the ingredients. From the sunny Mediterranean to a small bistro in France, take a cue from these fun flavor themes, adding and subtracting items as your taste buds see fit.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons sugar
4 tablespoons butter
½ egg yolk
2 tablespoons orange juice
INSTRUCTIONS

   1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
   2. In a medium-sized bowl, mix flour, baking powder and sugar.

   6. With a floured rolling pin, roll out dough and shape into a 12” pan, then bake for 20-25 minutes or until dough is golden brown.

Tip: You can skip a few steps by using a store-bought sugar cookie dough, rolled and shaped to fit a 12” pan. To show some extra love to your sweetheart, use a culinary mold or your own free-hand talent to create a heart-shaped crust.

Fruit & Cream Pizza Tart

INGREDIENTS
Prepared sweetheart pizza dough (cooled)
4-6 ounces chocolate-hazelnut spread
4-6 ounces whipped cream topping
1 cup white sugar
1 cup water
2 oranges, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced
2 pears, skinned, seeded and thinly sliced
4 kiwis, skinned and thinly sliced
INSTRUCTIONS

   1. Create a simple syrup by combining sugar and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat and bring water to a boil, stirring constantly. Once sugar is dissolved, remove your simple syrup from the heat and let cool.
   2. As syrup cools, spread a generous layer of chocolate-hazelnut spread, then a layer of whipped cream across entire pizza crust.
   3. Once cooled, pour syrup into a medium-sized bowl. Lightly toss all fruit slices in the syrup, then arrange decoratively on crust.

Tip: To achieve an elegant and colorful presentation, begin at the center of your crust and arrange your fruit in a fanning, circular motion, working your way toward the edge of the crust.

This Valentine’s Day, take to the kitchen to express just how much you care for your loved ones. By creating a pizza personalized with their favorite flavors and ingredients, you present a meal that’s sure to become a special memory.

My first order of seeds arrived from Botanical Interests! In a nice box that I am using to keep all my seed packets as they come in order of when to plant.

I need to make another order, I am going to order from Freedom Seeds These are the people from Little Homestead In The City, who have been a great inspiration to me and got me started into my new life.

The only reason I didn't order all my seeds from them, is I really don't know what I am doing, and since their seeds website wasn't ready, I needed to do A LOT of reading of seed descriptions. It was just easier to order from Botanical Interests.  But I plan on ordering some from the Little Homestead people this weekend, I still have more to get!
